The following cat rescue organizations are local to Indiana. While they don’t focus on Maine Coons, it’s worth checking whether they have any Maine Coons available.
Specialty Purebred Cat Rescue
Specialty Purebred Cat Rescue has found quality, loving homes for abandoned and surrendered purebred cats for the past 24 years. They are the largest rescue of their kind in the Midwest, having foster homes in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. Even though they can foster over 100 cats at one time across their foster homes, there is always a waiting list of cats that need to come in. These purebred cats are waiting for their forever homes while being given the best care by their fosters, kept in homes in their own rooms.
The rescue organization’s mission is “to use our specialized knowledge of cat breeds to provide an appropriate foster alternative for homeless purebred cats and kittens whose special requirements are difficult to meet in a shelter environment, in addition to helping as many special needs domestic cats as our resources allow.” After finding a cat you would like to adopt on their “Available for Adoption” page, you can complete an online application.

Indiana Organisations Dedicated to Help You Find a Rescue Pet
The following pet rescue organisations are local to Indiana. While they don’t focus on Maine Coons or cats, it’s worth checking whether they have any Maine Coons available.
Animal House Sanctuary
Animal House Sanctuary in Huntington, IN, is run 100% by volunteers “dedicated to restoring the hurt, broken & otherwise unwanted dogs, puppies, cats, & kittens.” They pull animals on the euthanasia list from public shelters; others are there because they would not do well in public shelters. These forgotten cats and dogs often enter the sanctuary sick, hurt, and defeated. Still, they become lovable and happy once they realize they are in a safe and loving place.
The foster-based sanctuary aims to adopt their cats and dogs to serious adopters who will give the sweet animals a loving home. Since they do not have a location open to the public, an adoption application must be mailed. Meet and Greets are by appointment only, and same-day adoptions are not allowed.
Porter County Animal Shelter
Porter County Animal Shelter takes in more than 1,000 animals annually that need homes. The $3.25 million state-of-the-art facility opened in 2017 in Valparaiso, IN. It was funded through the selling of their old facility as well as a one-million-dollar donation from a long-time volunteer. It is the county’s only publicly owned and operated animal shelter, taking in strays, abandoned, abused, and neglected animals.
The Porter County Animal Shelter gives homeless animals love and shelter until they can find them forever homes. The new facility has a cat patio and a cat community room, making their feline friends comfortable while waiting for a loving family to call their own. To adopt from this shelter, you must complete an online application to start the process. Home visits may be required if you have small pets or other animals to ensure the new addition is a good fit.
Animal Protection Association
Animal Protection Association, or APA, in Jeffersonville, IN, has been saving the lives of homeless cats and kittens since 1999. You can meet most of their felines at the Clarksville PetSmart Adoption Center or the APA shelter. The association strongly believes that adopting two kittens at once is the best way to ensure they are happy and social. APA is proud to be a Doris Day Animal Foundation Grantee for making a better world for animals.
Bartholomew County Humane Society
Bartholomew County Humane Society, or BCHS, in Columbus, IN, has spent over 50 years dedicated to providing humane care for needy animals. They care for up to 700 animals each year. They are committed to providing the five freedoms of animals: freedom from hunger and thirst; discomfort; pain, injury, or disease; fear and distress; and freedom to express normal behavior.

If the cat’s location is listed as “Petco,” you will find the pet at the Petco store in Bloomington. Cats listed as being located at “Petsmart” are available at the Petsmart store in Martinsville. If the location is “Foster Home,” please call ahead, and the shelter will arrange for the pet to come to meet you there. Other cats are at the shelter. Because they are available on a first-come, first-served basis, the shelter encourages you to visit during business hours to meet and adopt your wonderful new feline friend. If that is not convenient, you can fill out an online application.
PAAWS
PAAWS, “Proving Animals Are Worth Saving,” in Newburgh, IN, serves the tri-state area of Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Unless otherwise stated, animals are with foster families. They have new arrivals daily, so not all of their animals are pictured on their website. Anyone wanting to adopt should know that nearly all of PAAWS’ cats and kittens must be housed indoors.
